Tile guide
Whatever you pick at the tile shop, we fit it. Here's every common type of tile, where it suits, and what it typically costs to buy. Prices are for the tiles only, per square metre.
Glazed clay tiles. Light, easy to cut and the widest choice of colours. Best on walls and light-use floors.
Denser and harder than ceramic, and soaks up almost no water. Strong enough for any floor, wet room or heated floor.
Tiles from 600 × 600 mm up to 1200 × 600 mm and bigger slabs. Fewer grout lines and a clean, modern look. Needs a very flat surface and a levelling system.
The classic 200 × 100 mm brick tile, flat or bevelled. Timeless on kitchen splashbacks and bathroom walls.
Small tiles on a mesh sheet, in glass, ceramic, porcelain or stone. They bend round curves and grip well on shower floors.
Natural stone such as Carrara and Calacatta, polished or honed. Beautiful, but it must be sealed and doesn't like acidic cleaners.
Natural stone with a warm or rugged look. Every tile is different. Sealed when laid, and resealed every so often.
Hand-glazed tiles with uneven edges and colour that shifts tile to tile. Laid with tight joints for that handmade shimmer.
Encaustic-style and Victorian geometric floors, usually in hard-wearing porcelain. Perfect for hallways and porches.
Long planks that look like timber but are fully waterproof and fine over underfloor heating. Great in herringbone.
Thick, frost-proof porcelain slabs with a slip-resistant face. Barely stains and needs no sealing.
Chips of stone or glass set in a base, or a porcelain tile made to look like it. Playful and very hard-wearing.
Huge sheets up to around 3200 × 1600 mm, often only 6 mm thick. Almost no grout lines: whole walls, showers and worktops in a single piece.
Glass mosaics and tiles that catch the light. Cut with special blades and fixed with white adhesive so the colour stays true.
Unglazed clay floor tiles, the traditional red farmhouse floor. Laid on a solid bed and sealed to stop stains.
Patterns
How tiles are laid changes a room as much as the tile itself. Patterns with more cuts take longer, so they cost a little more to lay.
Choosing your tiles
Most customers choose their own tiles at a tile shop. Here's everything to check before you buy, so the tiles suit the room, the right amount arrives, and the job goes perfectly.
Send the tile's name, a photo of the box label or a link, and we'll tell you if it suits the room, what it needs underneath and how many boxes to order. No tile is too difficult for us to fit.
Our work
A few finished jobs. The best way to judge a tiler is the straightness of the lines and the neatness of the cuts.
These spaces are ready for AR Tiling's own photos.
How it works
Send a few photos and the rough size of the room, or ask for a visit.
Everything measured, then a clear written quote with the price and how long it takes.
Old tiles off, walls boarded, floors levelled and wet areas tanked. This is what makes tiles last.
Lines set out from the centre so cuts are even at both ends, then every tile laid true.
Grouted, silicone sealed where it meets baths, trays and worktops, then cleaned down.
A final look together before the job is signed off, with the mess cleared away.
Done properly
Most failed tiling isn't the tiles. It's what's underneath: plasterboard in a shower, too little adhesive, no room for movement. Every layer is done right here.
Set out level, with even joints and cuts at both ends.
Full coverage on floors and large tiles, spread with the right notched trowel, so no hollow spots.
A waterproof membrane in showers and wet rooms, sealed at every corner and pipe.
Cement or foam board in wet areas, never plain plasterboard.
Gaps left at the edges and over large floors so tiles don't crack as the building moves.

Most customers choose their own tiles at a tile shop. Send us the tile's name or a photo of the box first and we'll check it suits the job and tell you how many boxes to buy, free. [Confirm: can AR Tiling also supply tiles?]
No. Large-format slabs, natural stone, mosaics, glass, herringbone, wet rooms, outdoor porcelain: whatever you choose, we fit it.

Yes. Old tiles are removed and the walls or floor prepared, so the new tiles go onto a sound, flat surface.
It depends on the size and the preparation. Your quote says how many days the job will take before any work starts.
Yes, using flexible adhesive and grout made for heated floors, with the heating off while it sets.
Yes: splashbacks, re-grouting, replacing cracked tiles and other small repairs as well as full rooms. Small jobs have a minimum charge of around £150.
Ceramic is great for walls and costs less. Porcelain is harder and soaks up almost no water, so it's the better choice for floors, showers, wet rooms and anywhere with underfloor heating.
Sometimes, if the old tiles are flat and stuck down firmly. In showers, wet rooms and on most floors it's better to take them off, so the new tiles bond properly and last.
Leave new grout and silicone at least 24 hours before using the shower. If a job needs longer, your quote will say so.
Porcelain and glazed ceramic don't. Natural stone such as marble, travertine and limestone does, when it's laid and every one to two years after that.
Yes, a little. Herringbone, chevron and diagonal patterns take more cuts and setting out, so laying costs around 20 to 30% more, and you'll need about 15% extra tiles instead of 10%.
